Guided Fly Fishing

Orvis Streamside offers guided fly fishing for classic fly fishing on some of the country’s finest self-sustaining trout streams in the Traverse City region. Fly fishing guides are available for full day and half day float and wade trips on “flies only” waters of the Manistee and AuSable Rivers, as well as the beautiful Boardman, birthplace of the Adams fly. Wild rainbow, brown and brook trout are the catch Brook trout imageand release quarry using dry fly, nymph and streamer tactics. Although trips run all year on the “flies only” water, favorite hatches include the Hendricksons and black caddis in May, sulfurs, brown drakes and isonychia in June, and the famous hex hatch in late June and July. Late July and August terrestrial, trico, and baetis fishing rounds out the summer. Aggressive Fall spawning browns chase large streamers and attracters in September.

Downstream, late August turns our fly fishing guides’ attention to Lake Michigan coho and chinook salmon. This migration of large fish culminates in October with a fall run of steelhead. Steelhead fishing continues all winter and peaks with the huge Spring run of steelhead in March and April. These enormous 8 to 15 pound lake-run rainbow trout draw anglers from around the world. Our fly fishing guides utilize traditional sink tip, indicator or, if you prefer, “chuck and duck” methods to land silvery sticks of dynamite. Orvis Streamside’s fly fishing guides float and wade the Betsie and Platte Rivers for salmon and steelhead. Our Orvis Streamside guides are not only expert anglers and fly fishing instructors, but also great people who you’ll enjoy spending the day with.

Do you like sight-fishing, extreme visual streamer “eats”, or explosive topwater action? Then maybe a smallmouth bass trip with a Streamside guide is for you. Lake Michigan offers a unique smallmouth fishery for some of the largest “smallies” in the country. Smallmouth bass  roam the shallow warming flats of Grand Traverse Bay in the late Spring and in sections of the lower Manistee River during the dog-days of Summer, and Streamside has the guides to take you to them. Streamside also has guides for northern pike, Atlantic salmon and warm water species as well. River fishing for smallmouth bass and northern pike is also good early June through mid-August which includes explosive topwater popper fishing.

One of the hot fisheries on Grand Traverse Bay is carp, and Streamside has the guides to help you find them. Each Spring, these enormous fish come up onto the shallow flats to spawn, feed on crayfish, and chase flies! We sight-fish these monsters either wading or floating. But rest assured, once you hook onto one,… look out!
