Tommy Greene released a gorgeous tiger trout near Traverse City last week. Check it out.
Anyone looking for a Christmas present for a prospective fly angler should take a hard look at the new Encounter rod packages. Orvis' new rod series offers some of the nicest casting tools for the money that we have ever offered. It's hard to believe that for $159 you can have a decent reel, weight forward line, and a decent casting tool. I have cast them all and they are pretty good designs that will enable any eager novice to beat the learning curve and deliver a fly to the target with lots of forgiveness. Their actions are slow enough for an inexperienced hand to feel the rod load, and fast enough to offer some backbone to cast to next level.

Lake trout continue to arrive in the Boardman at the mouth. They are pooling up and eating streamers and eggs. Some steelhead are also coming in daily and leaving as they get pushed. Levels at Sabin Dam are still high making fishing difficult. Levels continue to lower though and the upper Manistee is improving daily.
DON'T FORGET... UPPER BOARDMAN ABOVE SABIN DAM IS CLOSED TO FISHING UNTIL SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2014.
UPPER MANISTEE RIVER IS OPEN "CATCH AND RELEASE" FROM CO612 TO M115.
Take a ride along on the Upper Boardman River just 8 miles south of Traverse City, Michigan to see the fantastic river that has returned since the removal of the Brown Bridge Dam last Spring. This river has been underneath Brown Bridge Pond. The length of these videos requires that we put them in three separate sections.
The river is still fairly sterile this Fall. As woody debris and invertebrates re-inhabit the river, fish will return. Spring runoff will also help to reintroduce new life.
This great video was produced by the BOARDMAN RIVER CLEAN SWEEP, a non-profit advocate group for the Boardman.

Fishing continues to be fair. Salmon are about finished and anglers are fading with them. The streamer bite is picking up with the colder temps. Brown trout are shining the gravel all over the Upper Manistee River, but not on the bite aggresively yet. Some steelhead have come in with the late run chinooks and coho. Some lake trout are also in the river. More steelhead will arrive in a couple of weeks, but for now only a few skippers daily.
